Avian Medicine (Self-Assessment Colour Review), by Neil A. Forbes & Robert B. Altman (1998)

In recent years there has been an explosion in our knowledge of avian disease, and avian medicine has become one of the fastest developing areas in veterinary medicine. In this colour review, a ground of internationally renowned avian experts - some in clinical practice, others working in universities- offer practitioners and students an overview of avian medicine and surgery in an easily assailable form. Over 200 cases are presented as illustrated questions and followed by detailed explanations that add to the reader's knowledge rather than just testing it. The cases appear in random orders, as they would in practice, and cover all the more common avian problems. Together they form an essential aid to examination preparation and a reference for continuing professional development.

Living with a Cockatiel, by Neil A. Forbes (2007)

The cockatiel is one of the most popular of all pet birds, with a well-deserved reputation for being easy to care for and fun to own. Cockatiels are small, they come in lots of different colours, and they love being with people, so it is no surprise that they have a worldwide fan club. In this book you can find out about cockatiels in their native home, the different colours and varieties that have been developed, as well as tailor-made advice on diet, care and training. Best of all, owners tell their own funny and heart-warming stories of what life is really like when you live with a cockatiel.

Seminars in Avian and Exotic Pet Medicine:

Raptor Medicine, Original Research Article, Volume 9, Issue 4, October 2000, Pages 197-203, Neil A. Forbes

Falconers have a very close, but on occasions fragile, relationship with their birds, and in consequence have great expectations and requirements from their avian veterinarian. The majority of falconers have a deep awareness of their bird's health (eg, in comparison with pet parrot keepers) and may on occasion be more critical in their choice of veterinary services. This article attempts to enable readers to become one of the trusted few.

Avian Gastrointestinal Surgery,  Original Research Article, Volume 11, Issue 4, October 2002, Pages 196-207, Neil A. Forbes

Avian gut surgery is an essential although niche aspect of any avian clinician's skills. In particular, the avian veterinarian graduating straight into the role has immense skills to learn and to acquire, but even the experienced small animal surgeon will require considerable dexterity and knowledge enhancement. This review gives any surgeon a practical approach to all those common and less common indications for avian gut surgery. With the knowledge supplied here, a few delicate instruments, and some cadaver practice, all of the techniques described should be achievable by any surgeon.

Clinical Examination of the Avian Forensic Case, Original Research Article, Volume 7, Issue 4, October 1998, Pages 193-200, Neil A. Forbes

Veterinary forensic medicine presents considerable challenges to the clinician that are different from and additional to those commonly experienced in clinical practice. An ability to perform effectively a clinical forensic examination and to act as an expert witness is greatly assisted by an extensive knowledge of applicable case law.
