Tox Box 24 hour veterinary poisons antidote service

AdderWe have teamed up with the Veterinary Poisons Information Service to bring you the potentially lifesaving Tox Box service.

This service gives veterinary practices 24 hour access to drugs used in the emergency treatment of poisoning that they are most likely to need, but least likely to stock. Specific drugs and products used to treat poisoning are kept in stock at our referral centres and selected Vets Now clinics and host practices across the UK. These treatments are supplied at cost, plus a small handling fee.

To use the service initially contact the VPIS on 020 7188 0200 who can advise you on the toxin and treatment you require. If we stock the appropriate antidote they will advise you to contact your closest Vets Now clinic, Referral Centre or our support office to arrange collection.

The service is available 24 hours a day to all veterinary practices – you don’t need to be one of our member practices to use the service.

Current treatments which may be available include:

  • Activated Charcoal
  • Apomorphine
  • European viper venom antiserum (Zagreb®)
  • Fresh frozen plasma
  • Methocarbamol (Robaxin®)
  • Acetylcysteine (Parvolex®)
  • Vitamin K1 (Konakion®)
  • Intralipid

  • Latest News: For clients who keep poultry and captive birds

Please be aware of recent measures imposed to protest UK poultry from the recent Avian Influenza outbreak in Europe. We would recommend all poultry owners register their flocks with APHA so they can be directly alerted of changes in the current advice (this is mandatory for flocks of 50 birds or more). Please use this link to the APHA website for all latest information: Measures to protect poulty against avian flu.

  • Latest News: Falconers – Avian Influenza Prevention Zone

We have had a number of calls from concerned clients regarding the recent Avian Influenza 30 day prevention zone and how it may affect their falconry activities. Firstly we must emphasise the situation can change rapidly and please keep monitoring our website, APHA and the Hawk Board.

Currently falconers are able to fly their birds. For clients who hunt with their birds it is recommended to avoid flying feathered quarry - in particular waterfowl who are common carriers of the virus. Birds should be regularly inspected and any clinical signs reported to APHA. When in the mews or weathering biosecurity measures should be in place to prevent contact (direct or indirect - eg faecal contamination from above) with wild birds.

Unfortunately it is beyond the scope of the post to cover all scenarios or eventualities. If however you should have any specific concerns not addressed in this post please contact us straight away.
