Veterinary Students

Proud to support EMS externships

Great Western Exotics are proud to support EMS externships and opportunities to see practice with a team of specialist led world class veterinary surgeon’s and exotic nurses.

Who can see practice?

Please be aware that due to demand, we are only able to take Veterinary students in their Clinical years of study.

We are able to support 1 week to 4 weeks of placement.

Unfortunately, we are not able to facilitate work placements, school, or college students.

Graduated Vets and residents please contact us via email to discuss opportunities we may be able to support outside of this diary. This booking system is for students only.

I need an EMS placement, when can I come?

We fill up over a year in advance, so we suggest getting your request in sooner rather than later. Have a look over our calendar below and see when we have availability and book using Microsoft bookings. Our calendar is open and bookable for 2 years at a time for you to plan when you can visit.

We ask that if you are no longer able to attend that you give as much notice as possible, so another student is able to take the opportunity to see practice with us.

What to expect & bring

You’ll have the opportunity to shadow the clinical teams in all aspects of the day to day running of an Exotic’s only Hospital.

This may be 1st opinion, referral, or emergency work.

There are opportunities to see consults, scans (US/Xray/CT), surgeries ranging from endoscopy to orthopaedics to enucleation, dental procedures and so much more.

Both VS & RVN’s will happily teach, discuss, challenge and question you so you get the most out of your time with us.

We love to support you getting hands on and we will allow and support all we can.

Indoor only shoes - we can provide theatre shoes or shoe covers if you do not have these but we encourage you to bring your own

Scrubs - if you have your own scrubs, we encourage you to bring these, however we can supply if needed and we do have a stock for theatre procedures.

On your first day please come to reception for 09:00 and one of the clinical team will meet you to show you around and get you settled in for your time with us.

We can offer flexibility on which days/hours you want to see and will support what you are looking to get out of your placement, have a chat with the team on day 1 to decide the hours that will benefit your training the most. We can even consider you coming in on a weekend if something is going on you are keen to see.

Accommodation

We do not have on site facilities for externs to stay but there are a range of hotels, B&B’s, and Airbnb’s in the vicinity to stay in.
